Ever wonder why I always sign off Call Me A Dreamer?
Thanks to one of my greatest friends and fellow photographer, Brianna Derro at BD Imaging, who shot this amazing photo above, I realized I hadn't told the story of why I began signing off with Call Me A Dreamer! So here it is!
When I was starting out in deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up, now lets be honest, we are all still deciding. But this was one particular time when I was truly taking time to discover myself and what I was good at, I found this catch phrase I really liked. Now you are probably thinking, Call Me A Dreamer, but I got you. My catch phrase at that time was The World Is Our Canvas. I used this as my motto as I began my journey in Photography.
In my third semester at Algonquin College Photography Program, my final portfolio had to have a theme. I found it easily as I believe that we are all searching for something in life and thought it would be a cool challenge to portray peoples hopes and dreams in images. Hence, my theme was Searching. Now right after you read this, hope on over to the Portfolio tap and take a look at my portfolio and read about the theme itself and see the photos there!
I used Searching as my theme because I believe that we are all searching for something in life. That something could be a dream job, dream wife/husband, dream family, what ever it is that is your goal in life. As I began to unravel this word and all its meaning, I discovered a little bit more about myself, what I was looking for, who I wanted to be, and even who I was becoming as a person. When I began to see that so much of my portfolio was actually my own life talking, it truly clicked for me how art form is really directed by the artist. I wasn't aware at first that everything in my portfolio related to me. Now it was like an epiphany when I did and my great friend, Brianna, who was the artist behind this amazing shot, laughed at me because she already knew!
From this, I began to really look into myself and as I continued through my portfolio, I began to see my hopes and dreams all starring back at me. I then spoke with one of my professors about mottos and business ideas for Photography. He asked me why I used the phrase The World Is My Canvas. I told him how I saw all the beauty in the world and wanted to make it tangible in an art form. He agreed this was a great reason but wanted to know what inspired me to want to do this.
I actually had to take time and think about it. What made me want to take pictures of the world around me, or the people around me or the events around me. Why do I want to pursue a career in Photography even?
My response to my professor after great thought was that I was a Dreamer and wanted to see people happy. If I could just take one picture and it made one person smile; or saved one persons life by showing them something they hadn't never seen about themselves before; or truly portraying love and beauty. I would be happy. I want to show the world how amazing it really is, people how truly awesome they are and take art to a whole new level.
And this is I truly discovered I was a dreamer and from that, the phrase Call Me A Dreamer described, as little as words can but, what I want my photography to be about. I never want to stop dreaming, loving, or discovering how beautiful life is. I get to just touch the tip of the iceburg with my photography.
So join me in that discovery! Book today for your own session or event!
